| What equipments do I need for a trip to Nepal? |
|
Geographically, Nepal comprises three regions of altitude and accordingly, the climate of Nepal varies from sub-tropical to arctic. According to the golden rule of trekking, you have to be comfortable that includes the clothes you wear including shoes and socks. Another important thing to remember is SAFETY FIRST because the things you wear and carry might save your life, thus, you have to be careful what you carry with you. Your clothes should be loose fitting and well worn in. All belongings for the trek should be packed in a soft kitbag or duffel bag. In addition to your normal daily clothes, you will need the following: Comfortable Footwear: Your footwear is one of the most important thing and it should be like old friend, thoroughly worn-in and comfortable. Socks: Cotton or woollon socks are best—avoid synthetics. You may need minimum of two - three pairs. Shorts: Shorts are probably more comfortable in summer treks, although watch out for sun burn and insect bites (or leeches) on your legs. Sweaters: The temperature of Nepal may vary greatly in between early in the morning, high noon and late evening, so we suggest that you carry at least one light sweater. In the winter season a heavy woolen sweater and one lighter sweater is recommended. Hand-knit Nepali sweaters are available cheaply in the tourist areas of Kathmandu. Outer Wear: Outer wear such as rain-proof jacket, rain-cap, poncho etc can be useful in summer trek. In winter you need to carry a down jacket, anorak and windcheater which you can wear over a down jacket in a really bad weather condition. Headwear and Eyewear: In cold weather and high altitude areas such as Tibet the sun is very strong, so you may need protective headwear and eyewear such as brimmed cap, sunglasses. In the winter floppy hat and wollen hat is very useful. You may also need headgear in the hot, sunny areas in the Tarai as well. Other essential items: Sleeping bag, sunblock cream, insect repellent, gloves, water bottle, route maps, daypack, torch (flashlight) with spare bulbs and spare batteries, matches or lighter, pocket knife, personal first aid kit etc. |
